It's at chapter 7 that really made the difference. Don't skip over the greetings there's nuggets of information which even I didn't know- cultural differences. If you've done this than that's the first 5 chapters. Why not sooner? I've already studied, memorized and drill the hiragana and its modifiers into my skull. I didn't think too much about this app until it started to explain sentence structure and then the translations that go with it. On iOS, you can use Midori for a more comprehensive dictionary. If you don't have a tablet, ask your college professors if they can lease a tablet for you in their name. The Human Japanese app and the Japanese Sensei app are both popular learning apps that. I'm using an 6plus and the screen is still too small. If you have the mini, it's a perfect app. Here's a tip from someone who has the phone and the tablet version: the tablet is better. Not to belittle some popular Japanese study book, but the medium of a tablet or phone works better here and this app shows off what a good app can do.
Then delivered in a package that pretty, entertaining and informative. The thing about this app is- it's better than all of that. I've already got a metric boatload of Japanese study material and a native speaker to my whimsy. I didn't think much about this app when I first picked it up.

It doesn't teach you how to write or about history/culture so if you have high intelligence or prior experience, you can learn (and retain) the whole course in a month. I have no complaints about HJ, but for learning at breakneck speeds (outside of an actual Japanese course), Duolingo has been very effective for beginner's fluency. When I was using it a few years ago, the creator would write e-mail interesting words to learn during the week which showed he was actively behind the app. They also have a Lite version and an Intermediate version. There are memory games you can play to practice your character recognition. They also teach stroke order and mnemonics if you need those. They do an absolutely terrific job of teaching you about Japanese cultural context while you are leaning the language. Human Japanese can be great to use depending on your desired pace.
